President's Message

Washoe County Mounted Horse Unit Auxiliary (WCMHUA) received official status as a 501(c)(3) from the IRS (EIN 88-2115205) in late March of 2023. Our inaugural year has been very exciting with community interest and enthusiasm growing as we continue grass roots efforts to spotlight our equestrian teams. Our efforts to increase community awareness and media exposure for the WCMHUA was bolstered by the Community Engagement team at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department; many thanks!

As our Mounted Horse Unit has evolved this past year, we have had several deputy/horse teams recently retire, including Undersheriff Jeff Clark, who re-established the Washoe County Mounted Unit (WCMU) in 2018. We are extremely fortunate that Jeff Clark has allowed his beautiful Mustang, Suja, to remain on the team after his retirement.

With the WCMU three members down, we were concerned that the availability of the WCMU team would be negatively impacted and would be unable to attend some important community events. However, as we begin the 2024 season, the team now has six new deputy applicants to ride for the WCMU which is very exciting. If all six applicants pass the April training and certification in Carson City, we will have the largest mounted unit in Nevada.

We look forward to continuing our efforts to help support the WCMU and all that they do to serve Washoe County and much of Northern Nevada.

Plans for 2024

We are very excited for 2024 and we are starting out strong. With six new deputies applying to join the WCMU, the April training and certification will be very important. We invite you to come out to Fuji Park in April to watch some of the training activities. We will be sending out invites with more information about the date and time for our Washoe County K9 team, the Raven team and the Detention Response team to join the training activities. The WCMU attends activities throughout Northern Nevada during the year and those events are usually posted on Facebook, Instagram and our website as we get notifications.

The team is asked to be at a number of events throughout the year and we do our best to keep everyone informed about each event. Be sure to check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for upcoming events.
